This is an informal screening, not a medical diagnosis. True congenital amusia
affects only ~1.5–4% of people, and pitch skills improve with practice at any starting point.
"Tone deaf" gets thrown around whenever someone sings off-key at karaoke, but the real condition —
congenital amusia — is a rare perceptual disorder in which the brain can't tell
musical pitches apart. Research puts it at roughly 1.5–4% of the population. The
other 96%+ of people who "can't sing" hear pitch differences just fine; they simply haven't trained
the vocal control to reproduce them. That distinction is exactly what this free 2-minute tone-deaf
quiz looks at.
How the test works
Part 1 — Listening (no microphone needed). You hear 8 pairs of notes and answer
whether the second note was higher, lower, or the same. The pairs start
far apart (a fifth or more) and narrow down to a single semitone — the smallest step on a piano.
Amusia makes even the wide pairs sound identical, so this part is the actual tone-deafness screen.
Part 2 — Singing (optional, uses your microphone). The test plays 5 notes; you
sing each one back and hold it. Real-time pitch detection measures how close you land, in fractions
of a semitone (musicians call hundredths of a semitone "cents"). Singing in a different octave counts
as a match, so the test works for
any voice. If you deny microphone access, you still get a full listening-based result.
At the end you get a friendly interpretation of both scores and a shareable one-line result.

Hearing it vs. singing it — two different skills
Pitch perception (hearing that two notes differ) and pitch
production (making your voice land on a note) are separate skills. Almost everyone
who scores well on Part 1 but poorly on Part 2 is not tone deaf — they're an untrained singer with
working ears, which is the ideal starting position. Vocal pitch matching is a motor skill, like
throwing darts: it improves fast with immediate feedback. That's precisely what our

What your score means
7–8 correct: your pitch discrimination is fine, down to a semitone. Not tone
deaf.
5–6 correct: you hear medium and large intervals clearly; the smallest ones need
a little sharpening. Very common, very trainable.
3–4 correct: small intervals gave you trouble, but catching the large ones
already argues against amusia.
0–2 correct: retest in a quiet room with headphones first — setup problems cause
most very low scores. If it persists, you might find formal amusia research interesting, but
remember this is a screening, not a diagnosis.

How do you test if you are tone deaf?
The standard quick check is a same-or-different task: listen to pairs of notes and say whether the
second one is higher, lower, or the same — exactly what Part 1 of this quiz does. If you can
reliably hear a one-semitone difference, you are not tone deaf. A fuller check adds pitch matching:

What does tone deaf actually mean?
True tone deafness (congenital amusia) means the brain can't perceive pitch differences — even large
jumps between notes sound the same. Singing off-key while hearing that it's off-key is not
tone deafness; it's just untrained singing.
How common is real tone deafness?
Studies estimate congenital amusia at about 1.5–4% of people. If you can tell that two notes a few
semitones apart are different, you're very unlikely to be amusic.
Why can I hear that I'm off-pitch but not sing in tune?
Because perception and production are different skills. Your ears work; your voice just hasn't
learned to obey them yet. With real-time feedback — hearing a note, singing it, seeing how far off
you are — most people improve within weeks.
Can tone deafness be fixed?
If you pass the listening part, there's nothing to fix — just a voice to train, and
pitch-matching practice does exactly that. Discrimination of very small intervals
also improves with regular ear training.
